DENSITY ALTITUDE FACTORS

ALL WE NEED TO REVIEW :

1.-As we red at the post types of altitude , density altitude is the Pressure altitude Corrected by non-standard temperature deviation.

2.-Density altitude is inversely proportional to density that means that if Density altitude increases de density decreses and viceversa ( check types of altitude).

3.-Preasure, temperature and density are related with the equation of perfect gases ( P=ρRT) , see the post atmosphere characteristics .

4.- Pressure and density changes exponential and temperature changes linearly ( review atmosphere characteristics ).

DENSITY ALTITUDE FACTORS

  • Note : We are going to study each factor independently 

Temperature : At high temperature the air expands causing a lower density, if there is a lower density de DA increases.

                                  In other words P=ρRT so if P and R are constant ( fix value) and T increases, To mantain the equality ρ has to drop, so DA increases.

Pressure :  If the pressure increases the air becomes more compact causing the density to increase and the DA to decrease.

                            In other words P=ρRT so if T and R are constant ( fix value) and P increases, To mantain the equality ρ has to increase, so DA decreases.

Altitude  : Happens 2 effects , on one hand the air expands causing the density to decrease and the DA to increase. And in the other hand he temperature drops causing the density to increase and therefore the DA decreases. Resulting in the density effect is much more significant than the temperature effect ( remember that the density variation is exponential and temperature lineal ).

HUMIDITY: It is basically water vapor causing the air to be lighter (weigh less) causing the density to decrease and the DA to increase.

 

To sum up, The best situation for us  as a pilots is to have a low density altitude, so each factor that increases the DA we must take them in mind.
