ENGINE FAILURE AFTER V1

On this post I am going to explain how to proceed with an engine failure after V1 on an airbus 320.

When we have an emergency we must not forget te golden rules

  1. Fly
  2. Navigate
  3. Comunicate

First of all we must controll the aircraft, press the rudder to avoid the jaw ( we call it beta which for our effects is the ball of a turn coordinator). trim it , pitch up to climb ( 12,5º) and use the power we need  (TOGA).

when we reach 400 feet above ground ( safety altitude) we put the gear up ( positive climb — gear up) and we stablish the roles of the crew , pilot flying ( I have control and comunication) and pilot monitoring ( procedures ). 

Until here we have the flying part under controled, we are going through the navigation. Pilot flying must say ” Pull heading, active secondary , manage nav ” , which means active the Engine out stand Instrumental departure (EOSID), we previously have inserted on the secondary flight plan. Once we finish this the pilot flying says ” no OEB,  ECAM actions”, that allows the pilot monitoring to start the procedure meanwhile the pilot flying comunicate its intentions to ATC.

 

Now we explain the ECAM procedure that the Pilot monitoring has to perform.

First it has to say the underlined sentence on the ECAM. Engine XXX fail.

Then we must follow The ecam , we must put engine mode Selector on ignition, then Trhust lever 2 on idle, but before doing that we must ask confirmation to the pilot flying.

 

Wait 30 seconds and see if the engine relights. If no relights  then Engine master 2 off previous confirmation. 

Afterward we have to check the lower ECAM and see if we have Engine Damage or not.

how do we know if we have damage?

if we have :

  • N1 or N2 = 0
  • High EGT
  • Loss of oil/Hydraulic fluid
  • Loud noise/vibration
  • Uncontrollable engine stalls

In this situation we don´t have damage so the pilot monitoring has to say Engine secured ( In the case we had damage , we would carry on with the ecam)

When do we have to say engine secured ?

If we do not have damage , when the engine master is OFF

If we have damage : 

  • With no fire : we have to say engine secured with the first agent
  • with fire : when the fire is extinguish or when we have thrown the two agents, altough the fire continues.

 

With engine secured the pilot flying must say stop ECAM and  push to level off , retract the flaps, when passing throw the green dot  select the mode open climb and the engines to MCT.

Then the pilot flying says continue ECAM and the pilot monitoring continues the ECAM.

The pilot monitoring go to the fuel page and write down the consumption and say Clear engine 2 and pilot flying clear.

Then the pilot monitoring say secondary failures

  • Land ASAP yellow
  • Air bleed , go to the Bleed page and check that the other engine is supplying bleed, once is checked the PM say clear engine bleed and pilot flying say Clear

  • Electrics we do the same as before and swich on the APU.

When we finish with the secondary failures , appears the status page. When it appears the pilot flying says stop ECAM and has to remember 3 things:

  • Any normal checklist? ( normally after take off and climb checklist , or in other failures QRH)
  • Any computer reset? ( QRH)
  • Any Engine relight ? ( QRH)

When finish with this the pilot flying says Continue ECAM and the pilot monitoring reads the Status, When he finish the status the pilot monitoring says Remove statues , and the pilor flying says remove statues , and then the pilot monitoring says statues removed ( press the statues knob) . ECAM Actions Completed
